Space Design for Active Learning

This guide was created to provide access to the resources and "lessons learned" we encountered throughout the process of redesigning our library classroom into an active learning classroom. If you are tackling a classroom redesign project - check it out!

About...

As we went through the process of redesigning our classroom, these are the steps we identified as being essential to design success!

7 Steps to Design Success

Step 1: Learn the Process and the People

  • Every institution has its own set of policies, procedures and paperwork - make sure you identify the right people to help you along the way!

Step 2: Create a Timeline

  • Be realistic and give the project ample time
  • Establish a "finish by" date and work your way back from there
  • Don't let things sit - keep in touch with everyone involved and follow up quickly

Step 3: Choose a Designer

  • Ask around and find a designer you work well with
  • They will likely be your contact for warranty issues even after the project is done
  • Prices are set at a pre-negotiated rate so cost should be compatible from one designer to another

Step 4: Technology

  • Involve your Media and IT department for this one!
  • Do your research and determine your needs
  • Visit other classrooms and see how they've used technology

Step 5: Furniture

  • Comfort, durability and mobility are essential
  • Choose chairs and tables on casters or lightweight enough to move around easily
  • Try variety - chairs with/without arms or choose a variety of complimentary colors
  • Avoid sharp corners on tables - rounded edges are great
  • Furnishings should last you 10+ years so avoid customizing to specific technology

Step 6: Design Elements

  • Choose paint colors that compliment the learning environment
  • Accent walls provide interest
  • Durability is essential when it comes to flooring
  • Tile, laminate and wood floors look great but carpet provides sound absorption
  • Choose lighting that is energy efficient and adjustable

Step 7: Finishing Touches

  • Make sure your classroom is well stocked with supplies
  • Consider including a classroom library with essential resources
  • Train instructors on how to use the technology and get the most out of the space
  • Establish policies and procedures so everyone knows what to do when something doesn't work
  • Promote your new space!
