Interlibrary Loan

How long does it take?

This is dependent on the availability of the material and the lending institution. Shipping times can vary greatly depending on the location of the lending library.

Generally:

  • Books/Physical Materials: 2-3 weeks
  • Articles: 1-2 weeks

Where do I pick up my material when it arrives?

  • Books are available at the first floor circulation counter.
  • Articles are almost always delivered electronically. Please check the Electronically Delivered Articles section in your ILLiad account.

How long can I keep ILL materials?

  • The usual loan period is two weeks (length of time set by lending library). The items "DUE DATE" will be noted on pick-up.
  • Renewals may be requested online in ILLiad on or before the date the item is due. Once an item is overdue, the system will not permit renewals. Please check your ILLiad record to determine eligibility.
  • Items are subject to recall. Which means, if the lending library recalls the material back a phone call and email will be sent to you requesting the return of the item.
  • ILL privileges are blocked after 5 days if items are overdue. Due Dates on materials loaned to us are strict.

Where do I return ILLiad books?

Please return all books to the Circulation counter. Never drop any book in the book drop or remove any attached paperwork .

What does borrowing cost?

  • MCC attempts to borrow from libraries that will send materials to us for free, and most materials we receive are free.  However, if there is a fee it is up to the borrower (you the user) to pay it. The borrower will be informed before fees apply. This is rare and normally only applies to articles. Do note that requesting articles from the same journal more than 5 times in the last 5 years will result in fees.
  • Replacement costs for lost/damaged items are paid by the borrower (you the user) and determined by the lending library plus a $10 processing fee.

What Does It mean only two Articles?

Libraries are restricted in how many times they can request or loan a single journal title before copyright fees apply. Due to this restriction, which is in place to stop copyright infringement, MCC only allows ILL users to request 2 articles from a single journal title.

What if you need more?

We advise that before you request any articles you take the time to speak with our reference librarians either in-person at one of the two MCC libraries or through Ask a Librarian. They are there to help you find information.

Although the library is restricted we can request these items but copyright fees will apply.
