HES 210 Research Guide

This guide will assist students enrolled in HES210 to explore and research health topics

Determining your research questions

Focus your topic and determine your research questions

Once you've gathered your background information and looked at your topic holistically, you now need to focus on a perspective of your topic to research. You want to make sure that your topic is researchable - not too broad and not too narrow. Otherwise you may be overwhelmed with too much research or unable to find enough research to complete your project.

Using the background information you have collected, consider the 5 Ws to help you focus your topic:

  • Who is effected by your topic? (people, culture, demographics)
  • What are the major issues and viewpoints to consider for your topic?
  • Where is your topic most important? (geographical regions- local, national, international)
  • When is/was your topic most important? Is it current, historical, ongoing?
  • Why did you choose this topic? Do you have an opinion on the issues surrounding your topic?

Once you determine the answers to these questions surrounding your topic, it will help lead you in creating the 4-5 research questions that address the following:

  • Impact of healthcare systems and/or laws
  • Comparison of different health interventions
  • Impact of efforts to address this issue/problem
  • Barriers/challenges to combating this issue/problem
  • How is this issue treated/viewed different across cultures

For further help in determining your research questions, refer to the assignment specifics provided by your instructor.
